We have been in the business for over thirty years and pride ourselves in only serving the freshest seafood. We source only the finest seafood all the way from the East to West coast and often have it flown in.

Our History

“Our passion is our food, it’s in our blood.”

My grandfather Nick Karras, grew up in the port of Piraeus, Greece and shared his passion for the sea with my mother.

The family immigrated to South Africa in the early 1920’s and settled in Pretoria, where he opened the Star Café on Church Square.

My father had a small coal transporting company, which I joined. As a sideline, I started transporting fish and then opened a fish wholesale business.

In 1992, I established The Codfather, now recognised as one of this country’s most iconic restaurants.

The codfather doubles as a lounge and restaurant. I visited on multiple occasions over a few days and enjoyed drinks and excellent roasted/baked fish. The outdoor seating is great in the evenings for conversation and drinks; indoor seating is optimal for dinner. The prices are moderate and affordable with great table service by the hosts and hostesses. The owner walks around, greeting guests and making small conversations. I rate this lounge A+!

It was such a great experience at the Morning side branch. We went there for my Birthday on 2 October. We were escorted to our table which was in the middle in a loud area we politely requested a different table, and within seconds the manager of the establishment took us to our new table which was in a bit more quieter area. The food was outstanding!!! I had the Mini Codfather Sushi platter and my partner had Prawn Rissotto. I am a major Foodie! And the food did not dissapoint. Compliments to the kitchen staff. And my cocktail was nice and strong and very tasty. I had a kiwi and coconut cobbler 10/10💪🏼😌 Our server gave us such good service and had really good etiquette throughout the night!!! He went the extra mile and brought me a birthday cake and even sang for me one man alone. I wish I could remember his name but I won't forget his face. 10/10 for that waiter 10/10 for the food 10/10 for ambience 10/10 overall for the whole experience. Would definitely recommend 👌🏼🙌🏼 and definitely go back for the vibes
