Gold Fish Project - NGO

The initial, primary objective of the NGO is to uplift the living conditions of the community in Kliptown Soweto Johannesburg.

Goldfish project will erect food tunnels at Kliptown, these individual food tunnels will be sold to corporate sponsors, for a fee which includes the purchase of the actual hardware, the grow boxes, irrigation and initial vegetable seedlings. A horticulturist will be employed to plant and oversee the continual success of the food tunnels. A cam-corder will be installed at each tunnel, so any corporate or doner can look at the state of their tunnel, on line, at any time.

There are 5 restaurants owned by the directors, and 50% of the produce, will be purchased by those restaurants, at market related prices, this money will be used to pay the horticulturist and replenish the vegetables, fertilizers and running costs of the production. The other 50% of the produce will be given to the Kliptown Youth Centre, under the control of Bob, and prepared for the local youth to eat.

At the Kliptown youth centre, the facilities will be improved, kitchens upgraded, and the dining room upgraded. The local children will then be able to come and have a meal each day, on condition that they bring 2 backs of refuse they have collected in from the streets and separated for recycling.

This will get the streets of Kliptown, which are in a terrible state cleaned up and maintained.

The next phase is to get a computer and the education centre going, so children have the ability to visit the centre and have access to internet, education and books. There is a very small understocked library currently and we intend to get volunteer teachers and educators in to assist with the children’s education, including sex education, hygiene and fitness assessments, with exercise programs and nutritional.

A further project will be to establish a small health clinic there, where contraceptives, sanitary pads and basic hygiene product hampers can be given to the local orphans and unemployed, to improve their basic human dignity, hygiene and health. In time mental health issues can also hopefully be addressed where possible, and addiction addressed, with the help of professional volunteers

Bob has a long history and support from International doners, we intend to communicate with them and encourage them to get more involved in funding and international exposure, so more tourists will visit the centre and get involved in the upliftment of this forgotten sector of Soweto, and South African history.

We have aligned with another ngo, who is involved in football clinics and it is hope to start a Kliptown Youth Football club, sponsored by some corporates with the hope of potentially finding some local hidden talent, and creating pride for the local community.

In a professional manner we will approach the local, and regional government for assistance and infrastructure upgrades. Ablution facilities and sanitation are very substandard. Kliptown has been sadly side-lined by government, and has not improved as much as the rest of Soweto. No roads are tarred or maintained, raw sewage runs in the roads, and live electrical cables lie around.

These substandard living conditions, cause a spiral effect, where people with no basic pride and dignity and sanitation, revert to crime, lack of motivation and hope. By improving basic nutrition, hygiene, education and community pride, we intend to make Kliptown a community with hope pride and dignity.

Once Kliptown is well underway, we hope to roll this model out in other forgotten communities in Gauteng.
